Population

The Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ decreased from 157,115 in 1970 to 138,333 in 2010. That was a decrease of 12.0 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 1,526 in 1970 to 2,934 in 2010. That was an increase of 92.3 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 1.0 percent to 2.1 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) decreased by 13.0 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary source of added population in the first two periods, replaced by NIM in the latest period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. The same relationship of the factors in adding population continued to apply.
